Hat sizing guide
How to Measure Your Head for a Flex Hat
A two-minute measurement can tell you whether S/M or L/XL is the better starting point—and help you avoid a hat that pinches, rides high or slips.
Flex hats look clean because they do not rely on an adjustable rear strap. That also makes the size choice more important. Measure the widest part of your head, compare that number with the size range shown on the current hat listing, and choose for comfort rather than assuming your usual shirt size translates to headwear.
The quick answer
Wrap a soft measuring tape around your head about one finger above your eyebrows and just above the tops of your ears. Keep it level, snug but not tight, and record the circumference. Repeat twice. Then compare the largest repeatable measurement with the specific hat’s listed S/M or L/XL range.
How to measure your head in five steps
- Use a soft tape. A tailor’s tape follows the shape of your head. If you only have string, mark where it overlaps and measure the string against a ruler.
- Start above the eyebrows. Place the tape roughly one finger above your brow—the area where the front sweatband normally rests.
- Pass above the ears. Run the tape just above the tops of both ears and around the fullest part at the back of your head.
- Keep it level. Check in a mirror or ask someone to confirm the tape is not climbing in back or dropping over one ear.
- Measure more than once. Use the largest measurement you can repeat without pulling the tape tight.
| What you notice | What it usually means | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Pressure at the temples | The band is likely too small or too tight for all-day wear. | Try the larger listed range. |
| Hat rides upward | It may be too tight, or the crown shape may not match your head. | Recheck circumference and crown preference. |
| Hat shifts when you move | The size may be too large or the crown may sit too shallow. | Try the smaller range or an adjustable snapback. |
S/M or L/XL: what if you are between sizes?
Start with how you plan to wear the hat. If you prefer a firm fitted feel and your measurement sits comfortably inside the smaller range, S/M may work. If you are near the upper edge, wear thick hair under the hat, or dislike pressure around your temples, L/XL is usually the safer starting point. The exact range can vary by construction, so the current product listing—not a generic chart—should be your final check.
Do not count on a tight hat stretching an entire size. A stretch band can relax slightly with wear, but it should feel secure rather than painful the first time you put it on.
Flex hat vs. snapback when fit is uncertain
A flex hat gives you a smooth fitted profile and a stretch sweatband. A snapback gives you adjustment at the rear. If your measurement falls cleanly within a listed flex range, the fitted look is easy to choose. If you are buying a gift, change hairstyles often, or land directly between ranges, an adjustable snapback removes more guesswork.

Sized flex hat
The current Lookout 3 Paisley uses S/M and L/XL options, making a head measurement useful before choosing your size.

Adjustable snapback
The current Intricate snapback offers rear adjustment, a practical choice when you want to fine-tune the fit instead of selecting a fixed range.
Three fit details circumference cannot tell you
Crown depth
Two hats with the same circumference can sit differently. A deeper crown sits lower; a shallower crown may ride higher even when the band fits.
Hair and daily use
Measure the way you normally wear your hair. If you switch between very different styles, a snapback gives you more day-to-day adjustment.
Comfort preference
Some shoppers like a locked-in band; others notice temple pressure quickly. When two sizes appear possible, your comfort preference is the tie-breaker.

Shop Metal Mulisha HatsFrequently asked questions
Where should the measuring tape sit?
Place it about one finger above your eyebrows, above the ears and around the fullest part at the back of your head.
Should the tape be tight?
No. Keep it flat and snug without compressing your skin. Pulling it tight can push you toward a hat that feels uncomfortable.
Should I size up if I am between flex-hat sizes?
Usually yes if you dislike pressure or sit near the top of the smaller range. Always compare your measurement with the current listing because ranges can vary by hat construction.
Is a snapback easier to buy as a gift?
Often, yes. The adjustable closure accommodates more head sizes when you cannot measure the recipient first.
